Hubbard Glacier - Beautiful Sights & Sounds!

From Juneau the Holland America Oosterdam headed north 200 miles to Hubbard Glacier. We had 4 hours to enjoy nature at its best. As we approached the glacier the captain opened the bow for cruisers to watch as we approached the magnificent glacier. After bundling up in our warmest clothes we grabbed some hot chocolate from the lido deck and headed out to the bow. After all, wouldn't the bow be the best place to watch as we approached?

The answer to that question is YES! HOWEVER, not when the outside temperature is 50 degrees and the ship is moving at 15 knots. It was COLD!!! We stayed on the bow about 15 minutes and then headed back to our room to sit on the verandah. At least there we did not have the wind hitting us in the face. This was a much better choice for us. We toured the glacier for 4 hours in the afternoon. It seemed as though we were moving at glacier speed as we approached Hubbard. The icebergs in the water brought about conversations of Titanic. The Hubbard Glacier was the most beautiful blue the eye has ever seen. It was indescribable and pictures do not do it justice.  You just have to go see for yourself. Then there was the sounds of the glacier calving (ice breaking off and falling into the ocean).  The sound was similar to the sound of thunder cracking. It was amazing! We were on a cruise ship with approximately 2,000 other people yet no sound could be heard. Everyone on board waited in silence to hear the epic sound. It was an experience unlike anything I have ever done before!

What is there to do while visiting the Hubbard Glacier?

We brought our binoculars for better viewing of the glacier and surrounding landscape. Our time was spent on the verandah of our room. However, there was a nature talk in the Crow's Nest on the 10th deck during our time at Hubbard that we could have attended.
